Water main break closes stretch of 12 mile in Berkley

Westbound 12 Mile just west of Woodward shut down for repairs

BERKLEY, Mich. – A stretch of 12 Mile Road in Berkley is expected to be closed until Tuesday afternoon because of a water main break.

Just two days after the Woodward Dream Cruise, Berkley police along with the Department of Public Works have shut down both directions of 12 Mile Road west of Woodward Avenue because of the break.

12 Mile is closed between Woodward Avenue and Brookline (a residential street.)

The city says repairs are expected to last until Tuesday at noon.

DPW workers on scene Monday morning told Local 4, a four-inch main broke so badly the it buckled the road. Repair crews say this is not the main line in the area, but feeds the Roselawn Park Cemetery, roughly a dozen homes and businesses, including Brookline Family Dentistry and Crispelli's Bakery and Pizzeria.

Local 4 has just learned the city plans to turn the water back on to allow water into homes and businesses.

Workers said this will also help with contamination – no bacteria will get in, if water continues to flow out.

They will let the main leak until consumers gets on scene, which could take several hours. Expect westbound 12 mile at Woodward to be closed for most of the day.
