Pregnant woman pleads guilty to driving drunk with child in car

Clawson woman faces sentencing next after being arrested May 28 in Southfield

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A woman who is eight months pregnant has pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge after she was pulled over by Southfield police with another child in the car.

Ronia Hi-Jazi, 37, of Clawson, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Monday morning on Southfield Road, just north of 10 Mile Road.

Police said they initially responded to the scene on the report of an accident.

"She had driven off the road and crashed into a street sign," said Lt. Nick Louissa. "Our officers gave her a series of alcohol-related tests on the scene. She failed every one. Upon inspection, the officer noticed she had a young child in the back seat and then he realized she was pregnant."

Hi-jazi blew a 0.15 blood alcohol level and police arrested her at the scene.

Her 9-month-old child was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked for injuries and was released to Child Protective Services.

Hi-jazi was charged with operating while under the Influence and child endangerment.

Her sentencing is set for June 8.

This is not Hijazi's first run-in with the law.

Local 4 has learned she spent 118 days in jail for failing to appear in court on a felonious assault charge in 2010.

"Driving drunk with a child in the car, then finding out she's pregnant, it's just disturbing," Louissa said.
