ROYAL OAK - Royal Oak is now counting its canines.

The city has decided to take a census on dogs after it was discovered that only 3,500 of the estimated 23,000 dogs owned in the city carry licenses.

The state law mandates that every dog six months and older must have a license.

In the city of Royal Oak, licenses are only given to dogs that are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

Dog owners are urged by the city to get their dogs licensed before the census begins on July 1.
