Neighbor broke through ice to save boy from freezing water

SHELBY TWP., Mich. – The neighbor of an 11-year-old Shelby Township boy risked his own life to rescue the boy after he fell through the ice of a pond near 23 Mile Road and Dequindre Road.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. Thursday. Police said two boys were playing on the ice when the 11-year-old fell through. The neighbor saw what happened and ran out to help.

Within seconds the neighbor had also fallen through the ice. The man somehow broke through the ice and was able to pull himself and the boy to safety.
