Michigan governor returning from trade trip early to lobby for Medicaid expansion

LASNING, Mich. - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has cut short his trade trip to Israel to return home and lobby reluctant fellow Republicans to expand Medicaid to more state residents.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday evening night that the governor is en route and expected to be back Thursday morning. It's essentially do-or-die time if Michigan is going to make hundreds of thousands of more adults eligible for government-funded health insurance under the federal health care law.

Lawmakers plan to break for the summer after Thursday. The GOP controls both chambers.

House Democrats and Republicans teamed up to approve the Medicaid expansion legislation last week. But Senate leaders are having trouble finding at least half of the chamber's 26 Republicans to support proceeding with an up-or-down vote.
