TROY, Mich. – It's no secret the harsh winter took its toll on metro Detroit's roads. But the city of Troy actually plans to do something about it.
Troy's City Council this week approved a $5-million expenditure to match $5-million in county, state, and federal monies to replace the concrete pavement on Long Lake as well as Dequindre, Big Beaver, John R, and Crooks roads.
City Manager Brian Kischnick says people don't care who's responsible for the roads. They just want them fixed.
"When people drive through Troy, whether they live here or just traveling through, they don't know if they are on a county road, state road or local road and they don't care," Kischnick says. "They know their rim or tire was just flattened."
That's good news for local business owners, like Larry Chiapelli of Gramma's Gardens, who says the poor road conditions don't match the care owners show for their Troy businesses.
"I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to keep my place up really nice and no one comes by to do anything to clean this road," Chiapelli says.
Road work is expected to start next week on Long Lake. The entire project should be completed this fall.
