Vintage base ball match in Rochester Hills

Rochester Grangers

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Rochester Hills Museum will host a vintage base ball match on Thursday, June 12, between the Rochester Grangers and the Port Huron Welkins.

If you have ever wondered what base ball was like in 1865, this match will give you that glimpse into the game's history.

Games were nine innings and the infield was a diamond, but in so many ways this was a different game than what's played at Comerica Park. It was a time before players leaped over the outfield fence, or even wore gloves in the field. Gentlemanly behavior was expected and pitchers threw underhand.

Admission to the Grangers-Welkins match is free, and like proper hosts, the Grangers will provide post-game refreshments.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets.

The Rochester Hills Museum is at 1005 Van Hoosen Road, off Tienken Road between Rochester and Dequindre roads.
