Family says Ann Arbor doctor hit patient treated for gunshot wound

University of Michigan removes doctor pending investigations

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A University of Michigan-Ann Arbor doctor is accused of hitting a 19-year-old gunshot victim while he was being treated at the hospital.

Lukequan Williams was at the University of Michigan Hospital after the wound left him unable to move from the neck down.

His parents say a doctor treating him at the hospital became upset with him and began threatening and striking the teen.

"I thought I was going to come to a dead son. I thought the doctor was going to kill my son," said Williams' mother, Luneshia Williams. "He does not deserve to be threatened nor abused."

His parents say Lukequan called them Wednesday afternoon complaining about the doctor and telling them he didn't feel safe. His parents said they could hear him arguing with doctors while they were on speaker phone before the phone call went dead.

The teen told his parents the doctor grabbed his arms and assaulted him.

"He was grabbing his arms and yanking all over my son, basically," said Luneshia Williams. "I didn't see that. I only know what I heard. I wasn't here."

Police arrived at the hospital and questioned witnesses. The doctor accused later apologized.

But that's not enough for Luneshia Williams.

"What doctor, who I am supposed to trust in this facility, would even stoop to that level?" she said.

The University of Michigan Health System released the following statement on Thursday:

"We are cooperating fully with the UM Department of Public Safety in its investigation of this incident, and doing an internal review of out own. We have removed the physician in question from duty while these investigations continue."

Lukequan was at the hospital Thursday and his family expected he would be there through the night. They were filing paper work in an effort to get him transferred on Friday.
