DETROIT - At least 78 people from different backgrounds and different parts of the country share one common bond: They were all scammed by Garden City's Candice Campbell.

Campbell pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. The FBI said she duped family, friends and coworkers into handing over nearly $1 million for her to invest. But instead of making the promised investments, Campbell used the money to live large.

For example, she spent $23,000 at laser surgery centers. She spent another $40,000 at jewelry stores for accessories such as a 14-karat gold tennis bracelet with 216 round diamonds. She even spent $35,000 at sporting goods stores for items including 34 Virus Plague softball bats.

Federal agents said Campbell would bring her young son to meetings with potential investors to aid her scam.

FBI spokesman Simon Shaket said stopping Campbell will hopefully bring some comfort to the 78 people who are now wondering how to make ends meet.

Federal Judge Gerald Rosen sentenced Campbell to more than 4 years in prison, which is above the guidelines for her crime.

She also will have to repay more than $700,000 in restitution.
