Homeland Security test reveals more than 70 counterfeit air bags in Metro Detroit

DETROIT – People around the country have been seeing video of a counterfeit air bag exploding into a crash dummy.

The air bag test was done on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security in Detroit which recently seized more than 70 of the fake air bags. They were taken from a repair business and from an individual's home in Wayne County.

Agents say the air bags were chipped to Michigan from China and are so volatile that they can be deployed merely by static electricity.

No one has been killed or injured by the fake air bags. However, Homeland Security fears they are ticking time bombs on thousands of vehicles.
