Monday Marks 1-Year Anniversary Of Aiyana's Death

7-Year-Old During Police Raid On May 16, 2010

DETROIT - Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old Detroit girl during a police raid at her home on the city's east side.

Aiyana Stanley-Jones was killed May 16, 2010, with a gun that belonged to a member of the Detroit Police Special Response Team.

Detroit police were being followed by the A&E Network's "First 48" crime reality cable TV show when they raided.

Jones was on a sofa in the first-floor of the two-family flat when police tossed a flash-bang grenade through a window and burst through the front door.

Police said the officer's gun accidentally discharged after he was bumped or jostled by the girl's grandmother.

The focus of the raid was Chauncey Owens, the fiance of Aiyana's aunt. Owens was wanted in the May 14, 2010, shooting death of 17-year-old Je'rean Blake outside a nearby convenience store.

Owens was found in the separate upstairs apartment. He has since pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is awaiting sentencing.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office is deciding whether to file charges in the girl's death after getting a report from police last month. Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the case is still under investigation.

"The Michigan State Police (MSP) conducted a nine month investigation into the death of Aiyana Jones and turned it over to my office in March, 2011. In any police shooting we conduct our own independent investigation," Worthy wrote in a statement. "When MSP turned the matter over to us, we candidly indicated that our investigation would be a lengthy investigation, and that continues to be the case today. We are more concerned with being thorough than being rushed in this important case. We can have no further comment at this time in this ongoing investigation."

Also on Monday, the Justice for Aiyana Jones Committee flew an aerial banner around the house where Jones was shot.
