Neighbor credited for saving family from house fire on Detroit's east side

Al Bazemore: 'I had to feel my way through the house'

DETROIT – A family escaped an early morning house fire Friday on Detroit's east side.

A grandmother, mother and four children were taken to the hospital as a precaution after a fire started in their basement of their home in the 12500 block of Hampshire Street.

The children inside the home were able to get out of the house quickly and ran to a neighbor's house for help.

Al Bazemore ran to the home after he heard the children yelling for help. Bazemore entered the home with a towel over his face so he would not inhale dangerous smoke.

Bazemore told Local 4, "I went in about 15 times and came back out. I couldn't find the grandmother. The house was dark. I didn't know where she was. I had to feel my way through the house in order to find her."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
