New Meijer grocery store, apartments break ground on East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit

DETROIT – A new Meijer store and apartments are coming to East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.

The $60 million, mixed-use project between St. Aubin Street and I-75 will include a 42,000-square-foot grocery store with 213 apartments above it. Twenty percent of the apartments will be affordable housing units.

The project also will include more than 200 underground parking spots.

Residents are excited that a grocery store is moving into their area.

"It will just be so nice," Pat Cole said.

Cole said there used to be grocery stores, but they had left the city.

"I'm glad that I lived long enough to see it," she said.

The store and apartment will open in 2019.
