INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - An Oakland County deputy shot and killed a man after responding to a call of a unstable person armed with a knife in Independence Township
Deputies say a 35-year-old woman called 911 to report her boyfriend pulled a switchblade knife on her in their home located on Rattalee Lake Road.
The woman said the 38-year-old man was demanded to know where his hidden cigarettes were at.
She told police he was very agitated for several days and on medication.
The caller then barricaded herself in the bathroom to await police.
When deputies arrived they found the woman who told them her boyfriend was hiding in the garage.
When the overhead garage door was opened the suspect was found inside holding the switchblade.
The man was ordered to drop the knife repeatedly, say deputies.
Police say the suspect verbally challenged them and moved towards them with the knife.
A single shot was fired by one deputy and the suspect was hit.
He was treated at the scene and later pronounced dead after he was transported to the hospital.
The deputy who fired the shot is an 8-1/2 year veteran of the department.
The sheriff's office is investigating the incident.
