Off-duty Detroit police officer's gun goes off, kills woman

24-year-old Adaisha Miller killed after officer's gun discharges during embrace at party

DETROIT - A 24-year-old woman is dead after dancing with an off-duty Detroit police officer, causing a holstered weapon to go off - striking her in the chest.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said Adaisha Miller was in the 1200 block of Archdale at Officer Issac Parrish home for a fish fry on Saturday when they started dancing and Miller embraced Parrish from behind.

"Somehow in the course of dancing with the individual to his rear and touching his waist, his Detroit Police Department issued weapon discharged one time," Godbee said.

Miller was struck in the lung and heart. She died at an area hospital.

Godbee called the shooting a "very tragic, unfortunate incident," adding there was no intent to harm from Parrish and that there is no indication he had his hand on his gun.

"He is very remorseful of the incident and the tragedy of this young lady losing her life," Godbee said.

Godbee said 99.9 percent of times, a gun won't go off without something on the trigger.

"It should not have happened, but it did," Godbee said.

Miller would have turned 25 on Monday.

"For this to happen to her, whether they want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child and there's nothing I can do to get her back," said Adaisha's mother, Yolanda McNair.

"All she wanted to do was enjoy the weekend for her birthday. She had every right to enjoy turning 25 and look beyond that," said McNair.

Internal Affairs for the Detroit Police Department is conducting an investigation. The investigators report will presented to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review.

Parrish has been assigned to administrative duties throughout the investigation.
