Police say the gunman shot through a metal door with what police are calling a "high powered weapon," injuring the officer's leg with flying shrapnel.

Authorities say the suspected shooter is among those in custody. A firefight ensued after police took the injured officer to safety. One of the five men in custody was shot in the leg. The gun was recovered by police.

Chief James Craig said the officer, a 18-year veteran with DPD, is expected to be okay. He is alert at the hospital and his family is on the way to see him.

"He was the first one going (into the home), and as soon as he hit the door, the suspects opened fire," Craig said.

Investigators say the narcotics unit returned fire and got the injured officer to safety.

"I was in bed," said Queen Lewis, who heard the shooting from her home. "I thought it was firecrackers, but after all the police cars came, I figured they are not out for firecrackers."
