ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Royal Oak police said they have identified the person who spray-painted swastikas and the phrase "white power" on garages and vehicles, but they will not be pursuing charges.
Investigators said the person responsible suffers from "what seems to be serious mental health issues."

The person is set to be evaluated by mental health professionals.
Police believe the crime was a "cry for help" from the person.
"Crimes of this nature are extremely rare in Royal Oak and are not a reflection of our community," a Royal Oak police spokesperson said. "Make no mistake, the Royal Oak Police Department will aggressively investigate any instance of individuals threatening or intimidating our residents or guests. In this case, however, the motivation of the individual responsible was not what might seem obvious by the hateful message."

Racist graffiti found on garages, vehicles
Residents in Royal Oak woke Sunday morning to swastikas and the phrase "white power" spray-painted on garages and vehicles.
Police were called around 6 a.m. to the 500 block of Woodcrest Drive after someone found a swastika spray-painted on their garage door.
Officers found that other properties in the neighborhood had been vandalized. Vehicles, fences, garages and a tree were found with swastikas and the phrase "white power."
Six other residents filed reports with police, and authorities determined the incidents occurred sometime overnight in the neighborhood around Farnum and Maxwell avenues.
A resident in the 600 block of Hilldale told police their unlocked vehicle had been rummaged through; however, nothing was taken.
Detectives from the Royal Oak Police Criminal Investigation Division were called in Sunday.
