Pit-bull saves woman in New York

Dog hailed hero for saving owner from Long Island fire

A New York woman is giving her dog credit for saving her life.

Jackie Bonasera says she was upstairs when a fire broke out in her Long Island home. Her dog's barking alerted her to the flames.

She says she didn't even know the house was burning until her pit-bull started acting up.

Bonasera escaped unharmed through the garage. But once outside, she realized her dog had not yet come out.

"I ran out of the house and my neighbors came running over, and then I thought about the dog –I'm like, 'He saved my life, I have to save his,'" Bonasera told News 4 New York.

Bonasera told reporters she put her robe over her head and ran back into the home to find her dog named Cain.

More than 70 firefighters fought the blaze before it was put out. Bonasera's daughter, Alexus Stallworth, calls Cain "the town hero."

"He's a pit bull, too,"said Stallworth. "They have such bad reps, but he's such a good boy."
