Armed robberies reported near University of Michigan campus, police say

2 armed robberies reported early Wednesday morning

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan is on alert after two armed robberies were reported early Wednesday morning south of the school's central campus.

Ann Arbor Police said that around 12:20 a.m. a pedestrian reported being robbed at gunpoint on Arch Street near Packard Street by a person who fled in a dark-colored vehicle.

At almost the same time, the police department received a call about another armed robbery on South Forest Street near Oakland Street. The call was originally reported as shots fired, but officers later determined no shots had been fired.

The university also offered the following safety advice:

  • Look assertive and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be aware that your risk increases in secluded and isolated areas.
  • Walk with a trusted friend or co-worker when possible.
  • Trust your intuition -- if a particular situation makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, choose an alternative
  • Have your keys in hand before you reach your vehicle or residence.
  • If you feel threatened on campus, look for a blue light emergency phone or call 911 from any phone.
  • Keep rooms and apartments locked at all times.
