Detroit police chief 'vigorously refutes' recent FBI crime statistics

DETROIT – Police Chief James Craig held a news conference Monday afternoon regarding the most recent FBI crime statistics about Detroit.

The most recent statistics about crime in 2016 show that out of a population of 669,673 residents, there were 13,705 violent crimes and 303 homicides. The report says there were 579 rapes and 9,882 aggravated assaults. Robberies in the city numbered 2,941 and property crimes were at 31,630. A total of 8,787 burglaries and 13,938 larcenies occurred in the Motor City. Motor vehicle thefts were at 8,905 and there were a total of 554 arsons.

Craig said he "vigorously refutes the FBI's numbers."

Craig said the numbers are based on an old software system.
