Police Issue Amber Alert For Detroit Girl

DETROIT - Police in Detroit are investigating the disappearance of a 5-year-old girl from her home and the discovery of a child's body in a house about a mile away that was intentionally set on fire.

Sgt. Eren Stephens said Monday morning that authorities have "no evidence to connect the two cases."

An Amber Alert was issued Sunday for Mariha Trenice Smith.

Mariha's mother reported the child missing around midday Sunday.

She told police she last saw the girl sleeping on a floor in their home about 3:30 a.m. Later that day, she said the girl was gone and a window was wide open.

Stephens says investigators were awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death and gender of the child found about 8 a.m. Sunday in the burned house.

Mariha is described as 5 years old, 3 feet 5 inches, 26 pounds and has black eyes and black hair. She was wearing a black T-shirt with pink flowers on it and blue jean pants.

If you have any information on the alleged victim call 911 or the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-5900.
