How Detroit mayoral votes will be tallied for August primary

Counting write-in votes will complicate Detroit election process

DETROIT - Voters should have some idea by late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning whether the write-in ballots in Detroit's mayoral election are in the hunt for one of the top two positions.

However, after that decision is made it is off to the Wayne County Board of Canvassers.

There are 14 candidates on the ballot and two write-ins seeking to succeed Mayor Dave Bing. The top two vote-getters will face off in the November general election, with the winner moving into City Hall with a title and $158,000 salary.

Complete list: Detroit mayoral primary election candidates

Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey has been training people and consulting with state election officials on how the process unfolds. Following the primary, county canvassers will go over the spellings on each write-in ballot cast to determine who gets the votes.

Here's a basic rundown:

  • The Detroit City Clerk will tally the write-in votes and will record the spellings of the write in candidates' names.
  • Once votes are tallied everything will be sent to the Wayne County Board of Canvassers.
  • The Board of Canvassers always certifies elections.  However, in this election they will also be making the call on write-in candidates.
  • If a name is spelled correctly, there is no issue. If you get something that isn't spelled Duggan or Dugeon then you can bet the Board of Canvassers and curious attorneys for different campaigns will fight over the signatures will go toward.  It could take two weeks to check all write-in ballots.
