Royal Oak police tried to pull Beard's car over at 7:51 p.m. Monday for having an illegible license plate and driving erratically near Woodward Avenue and Catalpa Drive.

Beard sped away from police and led them on a chase that reached speeds of over 90 mph.

He lost control of the car on Catalpa Drive west of Coolidge Highway and crashed into two parked cars and a porch.

"Looking outside my window and seeing my front porch destroyed, and seeing how close it was to my house is absolutely terrifying," Kevin Mack said. "My heart's still racing a bit from it.

The passenger was immediately taken into custody, but Beard got out and ran, police said.

"That's when my kids got a little scared, so I sent them upstairs, locked the doors because I saw a man run into my backyard," Mack said.

Fortunately, the children had just gone inside before the crash, Mack said.

Berkley police found Beard near 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway after receiving a report of two suspicious men. He was turned over to Royal Oak police officers.

Beard has no previous convictions, but he has multiple outstanding warrants.

Beard is being held on $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on July 11.
