Presidential vote recount could cost Michigan taxpayers

Jill Stein asks for recounts in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania

DETROIT – By Wednesday night, Michigan could be ready to recount its votes from the presidential election -- a move that could end up costing taxpayers.

The attorney for Green Party candidate Jill Stein anticipates filing his recount paperwork Wednesday afternoon. She has demanded recounts in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Stein's camp wired $3.5 million to Wisconsin Tuesday night to pay for a recount.

Michigan election officials said Stein's current tab in the state is over $900,000, but the actual cost could be much higher. Taxpayers could end up footing the bill for anything over that initial payment.

"If the Green Party pays for it, I'm all about it," Matthew Johns, of Livonia, said. "But I don't think the taxpayers should pay more for this."

Johns wasn't alone in his thinking.

"If it's Jill Stein and her money, have at it and recount (as) many times (as) you want to, but not (with) my money," Traymar Gilbert said.

Plenty of people are suffering from election fatigue, and the idea of a recount doesn't ease that one bit.

"It was enough with Trump and Hillary," Cheryl Williams said. "Now this is being rehashed. Let's move forward."
