1866: Memorial Day is first celebrated in the United States at Waterloo, New York.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers that died during the Civil War. The holiday's scope expanded in the 20th century to include fallen heroes from all wars.

Often, amidst the barbeques and pool openings, it can be easy to forget the holiday's solemn purpose. On Twitter today, we found several poignant local reminders of Memorial Day's history and current relevance.
