DETROIT – Detroit police say it appears a group of teens were in an east side home Tuesday morning playing a dangerous game of Russian Roulette.
The potentially lethal game of chance may be to blame for the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy. A relative identifies the victim as Antonio O'Neill.
"It's a tragedy, a freak accident," said relative Delang Foutener.
O'Neill, who should have been in school at the time, was hanging out at the home with friends when he allegedly shot himself in the neck. Witnesses say there were a number of people inside the home at the time of the shooting. One of them was a 15-year-old boy who allegedly fled the home with the gun.
A trail of bullets in the house lead out the front door. The teen later turned himself in and handed the weapon over to police.
"You have a group of teenagers together and for whatever reason they decide to start playing with a weapon, you know that's an element for disaster," said Detroit Police Lt. Dwayne Blackmon.
In this case it ended in death.
O'Neill's family says he was on the right path but eventually was led astray.
"He was a good kid. He just got in with the wrong crowd," said his cousin, Meda Winfield.
Police are trying to figure out where the gun came from.
