Men's and women's apparel as well as toys and women's shoes have been the hot items at Great Lakes. Coach, True Religion, Michael Kors, Victoria's Secret, Nike, Swarovski and Aeropostale were among the stores with the longest lines.

The Thursday night shopping rush lasted until 4 a.m. Friday, with a new rush of shoppers hitting the mall at 7 a.m. At that time stores were reporting single-digit increases on average.

Credit and cash are being used equally at the stores, the spokeswoman said. A lot of shoppers are buying for themselves, especially items such as women's apparel and designer handbags.
