Stand-off between elderly woman, police ends after 6 hours

Suspect leads police on chase through Port Huron and into Lexington

SANILAC COUNTY, Mich. – A six-hour standoff between a 77-year-old  woman and several police agencies near Port Huron has ended with the woman being taken into custody and no one being injured.

Port Huron police said the chase started around 11: 30 a.m. Saturday when they attempted to pull over the woman for speeding in their city at Military and Pine streets.

Instead of stopping, the woman took off and a chase ensued. Police report speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.  The elderly woman also displayed a handgun during the pursuit.

She eventually stopped her car in the parking lot of the Lexington Police Department. Lexington is about 20 miles north of Port Huron

Officers surrounded the car. The woman refused to follow commands. Instead, she pointed the gun toward the roof of the vehicle.

Roads and shops near the standoff were shut down as Special Response Teams from St. Clair and Sanilac counties responded.

The woman refused any communication with Port Huron negotiators.

After several hours of trying to get the woman to leave the car, tear gas was deployed. She was taken into custody unharmed and transported to Port Huron hospital for evaluation.

A report will be presented to the St.Clair County Prosecutors office for possible criminal charges.

The woman's name is not yet being released.
