Sterling Heights man claims winning $79M lottery ticket sold in Troy

Ticket sold at John's Market on East Square Lake Road

TROY, Mich. – A Sterling Heights man has come forward to claim the single jackpot-winning ticket which was sold in Friday's Mega Millions drawing at Troy store.

The winning ticket, worth $79 million, was sold at John's Market, 75 E. Square Lake Road. The winner, David, who wishes not to reveal his last name, is a father from Sterling Heights.

The numbers were 2, 23, 41, 47, 54. The Mega Ball was 42.

David had the option of taking a one-time payout of an estimated $54 million or 26 annual payments totaling $79 million. He chose the annual payments.

Taxes are deducted in both instances.

"I checked the WDIV traffic report that said M-59 had traffic congestions, so I decided to shoot up Square Lake to I-75," David said.

He had never been to John's Market before. In fact, it shouldn't have even been open on the 4th of July.

"Normally we're not open on the holidays," said store owner Dan Shuwayhat. "Business has been a little slow so we decided to come in."

David found out he won on Saturday.

"My exact words were similar to 'Holy cow, I can't believe I won,' but I used a different phrase," he said.
