Sterling Heights police looking for thieves who swiped donation box from church

Donation box at Saint Rene Catholic Church stolen 3 times

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - Sterling Heights police have released surveillance pictures of two young men who are accused of stealing from a church several times this week.

Police said the donation box at Saint Rene Catholic Church on Ryan Road was taken Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Sterling Heights police Lt. Luke Riley said the thieves might not be strangers to the church.

"Somebody who has been in three, perhaps four is familiar with how it works," Riley said.

One of the men was caught on camera in all three incidents, the second was part of Monday's theft.

Riley said the video shows the suspect(s) kneeling in the church, praying and then walking out with the box.

"You wonder what would have happened if somebody confronted them while they were doing it," Riley said.

Descriptions released by police:

-White man in his mid-20s, slender build, dark hair. He was wearing a horizontal striped long sleeve shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and a dark blue hooded jacket with "New York" on the front I white letters.
