Storm drops at least 6 inches of snow on Michigan

Snow piling up Wednesday morning

DETROIT – A massive, slow-moving storm that hit the nation's midsection dropped between 2 and 5 inches of snow in Detroit and Southeast Michigan and created slippery driving conditions by the end of  Wednesday morning's rush.

Local 4 Weather Watcher Richard Jenny reported 4.5 inches in Westland, and Martin Lulgjuraj received 5.2 inches in Rochester Hills.  Four inches fell in some Detroit suburbs and Saginaw.

In other parts of the state, the National Weather Service says as of Wednesday morning 6 inches fell in the Grand Haven and Muskegon areas, while 5 inches fell between Lansing and Jackson. Four to 5 inches fell in Grand Rapids.

The highest accumulations, totaling 5 to 8 inches, were forecast for Michigan's farmland in the Thumb, surrounded on three sides by Lake Huron.

Snow turned to rain in Detroit, leaving roads covered in slush. Many highways and main roads were reportedly cleared early Wednesday.

The snow is heavy, wet and difficult to shovel.

Anyone without neighborly help or a snow blower, should take frequent breaks when removing snow.
