Woman breaks shoulder chasing after man who took her purse

TAYLOR, Mich. – A woman suffered a broken shoulder when a purse snatcher targeted her while she was walking to her car in a grocery store parking lot in Taylor.

Police released surveillance video in the hopes that someone will recognize the man who stole the woman's purse Tuesday morning. A suspect turned himself in to police Wednesday morning.

Around 7 a.m. Tuesday, the woman was putting her bag in her car and getting ready to get in the driver's seat when the man skulked around the silver Jeep, opened her door and asked her a question.

"He asked to use her cellphone," Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said. "She said no."

The man reached in and grabbed her purse and took off. She was hot on his heels as he ran back to the silver Jeep, got in and and took off. She tried to open the passenger door as the man drove away, and she was dragged until she fell and was hit by the rear tires.

"She was taken to the hospital, and the worst of her injuries is a broken shoulder," Sclabassi said.

Shoppers can't believe something like that would happen there.

"It's horrible that people go after the elderly like that," Devin Thomason said.
