Teen beaten with baseball bat after road-rage driver follows him 5 miles to St. Clair Shores

17-year-old says driver followed him after teen made gesture in traffic

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A 17-year-old boy is recovering from a brutal baseball-bat beating sparked by a Sunday night road-rage incident.

The road-rage incident began in Roseville and ended in St. Clair Shores, where the driver was followed.

Andrew Carbary's nose is broken and he's recovering from a concussion after a man followed him because of a gesture the teen made in traffic.

It started when the car in front of Carbary slammed on the brakes along Gratiot Avenue.

"(He) cut out in front of me and slammed on his brakes," Carbary said. "I flipped him off and he slammed on his brakes again."

Carbary admits he got mouthy when the two exchanged words, and the other driver kept following him and screaming for him to pull over and fight.

The two cars continued down Gratiot Avenue until Carbary pulled into a gas station to get away. But the other driver didn't let up.

"(My) biggest concern was him trying to run me off the road," Carbary said. "He's getting real close. He's coming to my side, coming over, like, side to side."

Carbary was followed for 5 miles onto Deziel Street in St. Clair Shores. The moment he stopped and got out of his car, he was attacked.

"Just swung it and hit me over the head," Carbary said.

The man took three swings to Carbary's head and face.

"I didn't see the bat until it was already in my face," Carbary said. "I was focused on eye contact.

"I don't know if he's done this before, but he was comfortable using that bat. Who's to say he won't do it again?"

Carbary never got a license plate or the make of the car. His mother is just thankful he survived.

"As a mother, I want to find him and make sure justice is served," Christina Carbary said.
