Thieves pry back bars, smash through glass to rob jewelry store in Troy

Jewelry stolen Tuesday morning from Troy Jewelers off Big Beaver Road

TROY, Mich. – The front window of Troy Jewelers is now boarded up after being smashed in Tuesday morning during a heist.

Even bars on the window didn't stop whoever was determined to get away the valuables inside.

"They were pretty desperate to get the jewelry," said Troy Police Sgt. Andy Breidenich. "They broke glass and bent iron bars to get in."

The store is tucked in a shopping plaza off Big Beaver Road near John R Road, but it appears the thieves had a plan to avoid the main entrances.

Breidenich said the thieves parked in a neighborhood next to the plaza.

"They went through a yard, jumped over a cement wall," Breidenich said.

At 5 a.m., no one saw the crime – and no one ever will. The thieves cut the store's power, disabling security cameras.

"I don't think it was their first rodeo. I think they've hit other jewelry stores," Breidenich said.

The store's owner didn't want to go on camera with Local 4 or detail what had been stolen, but did show the empty cases that were left behind.

Breidenich said police are looking into whether similar crimes in the area are connected.
