DETROIT - A Detroit police officer will stand trial in the shooting death of a 7-year-old girl during a raid on her home.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway on Friday tentatively set Joseph Weekley's trial for next April.
Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the May 16, 2010, slaying of Aiyana Stanley-Jones. Aiyana was shot as officers stormed the house, looking for a murder suspect.
Police were shadowed during the raid by a cable television reality show film crew. Weekley's lawyer, Steve Fishman, has said he client was "acting as a police officer in a dangerous mission."
Photographer Allison Howard also will stand trial next year on perjury and obstruction charges. Defense attorney Bob Harrison says Howard "has done absolutely nothing wrong."
