Truck drives into Macomb Township condo

Truck drives off road, into condo on Garfield Road in Macomb Township

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. A truck drove into a condominium complex Tuesday evening on Garfield Road between Hall and 21 Mile roads in Macomb Township.

It appears the truck drove off of Garfield Road and into the condo which is part of the Warwick Village complex. It was headed northbound on Garfield Road when it crossed the center line, jumped the curb, took out some bushes and trees, and struck the condo.

The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old Farmington Hills man, did not suffer injuries in the crash. However, he was taken to a hospital to have a medical issue checked out. A medical emergency may be what caused him to lose control of the truck.

Two people were inside the condo at the time. One woman was in the garage while her husband was sitting on the sofa. Witnesses say they heard noise of the truck hitting the trees and bushes before it hit the condo.

"I could see the truck coming because I was sitting where I could see the road, and I saw them coming and ... all I wanted to do was grab the kids," said one witness who was in a condo upstairs.

The truck, which is a Waste Management truck, was not carrying a load.

The condos have been evacuated near the crash because it is structurally unstable. The residents will have to find somewhere else to stay until repairs are complete.
