Urban beach pops up in downtown Detroit

Downtown Detroit Development Partnership brings sand in to Campus Martius Park

DETROIT – A day at the beach in downtown Detroit? Yup -- there's sand, chairs and some sun if Michigan weather cooperates.

The Downtown Detroit Development Partnership is behind creating the pseudo-beach at Campus Martius Park.

It sits in the southeast corner near the Civil War monument and is meant to mimic city beaches along the river in Paris -- minus the swimming.

Several people Local 4 talked with said the sand was a nice change of scenery in the city. Others said why not add a pool and some beach volleyball nets.

The "beach" will be fully open in June for planned activities.
