DETROIT - Grab a bunch of your girlfriends and plan a weekend getaway in Detroit, according to a travel tip from USA Today.

Health and fitness writer Holly Roberts writes Detroit has become a "girlfriends getaway" destination because of its renewed downtown and plentiful art-themed attractions.

"Detroit has worked hard to shed its image as a city on the decline, and thanks to some smart city planning and a gig hosting the 2006 Super Bowl, the Motor City is slowly but surely making a comeback as a destination city," Roberts says. "With more affordable hotel rooms than other urban centers--especially on weekends, when the business visitors clear out--and a revitalized downtown, Detroit makes a surprisingly cool destination for your next girlfriends' getaway."

Roberts' recommendations:

Where to stay

Atheneum Suit Hotel, Honor and Folly and MGM Grand hotel.

What to eat

Russell Street Deli, the Whitney and Rattlesnake Club.

What to do

The Detroit Institute of Art, stroll the RiverWalk, hit up Café D'Mongo's Speakeasy, dance the night away at V nightclub at MGM Grand, try something new at the Great Barbaroo Brewing Company.

Where to shop

Detroit Eastern Market, Pewabic Pottery, the Pure Detroit store and John R. King bookstore.
