Vigil held in memory of slain Wayne State police officer

Officers, first responders join residents with candles in hand

DETROIT – Residents of a Detroit neighborhood gathered in the memory of a campus police officer killed in the line of duty.

With heavy hearts, a community gathered to reflect on a man who died protecting them.

Officers and first responders from across metro Detroit gathered alongside residents of the Woodbridge community. With candles in hand, they remembered Officer Collin Rose by walking the streets he loved to patrol.

Katie and Juan Gomez brought their three young children to the vigil.

"We just want our children to value our public servants and to know our community stands together," Katie Gomez said.

Close friends told Local 4 News that Rose always honored fallen officers by participating in the Police Unity Tour.

"The motto of Police Unity Tour is that we ride for those who died, but it never crossed our minds we would be riding from someone in our group," said Frank Zdamnkiewicz, a friend.

While the community walked holding roses to honor Rose, the fallen officer's fiancee was surrounded by his brothers in blue at Saturday night's Red Wings game.

Those same officers and his fiancee joined the end of the silent walk to Lincoln and Brainard. That's where Rose was shot.

Fellow officers believe Rose is looking down smiling, but he lives on because his organs were donated, saving more than 70 lives.

A release said the event aimed to recognize Rose's contribution to "making our neighborhood safer."

Authorities said Rose was investigating possible thefts of navigation systems from vehicles near the Wayne State campus.

He was shot as he tried to arrest DeAngelo Davis, who was arraigned Friday on murder and gun charges.
