Weather: The calm before the warm in metro Detroit

Worry not: it will only last a couple of days

By Paul Gross - Meteorologist

DETROIT - Becoming mostly clear tonight, with lows in the low to mid 60s.

Our Thursday should start mostly sunny, with partly cloudy skies developing by midday as the debris clouds from a thunderstorm cluster way up north pass through. Skies then become mostly sunny for the end of the afternoon. Highs in the mid 80s. South-southwest wind at 8 to 13 mph.

Thursday night will be warm and uncomfortably muggy...but it's just for one night. Lows near 70.

Friday will become increasingly steamy and oppressive, with highs approaching 90 degrees in some areas. A line of thunderstorms will rapidly develop during the mid-afternoon period as a cold front approaches. While there are some limiting ingredients for storm initiation, there also will be enough ingredients present Friday afternoon to give us the risk for some strong storms. This could impact Friday evening high school football games, so stay tuned (an even better idea is to download the FREE Local4Casters weather app, which has a great radar display you can zoom in as tight as you want to track storms heading your way).

Storms end sometimes between midnight and dawn for most of us. Lows in the upper 50s.

Most of us will have a dry day Saturday, but some of you in Lenawee and Monroe Counties may still have a shower lingering around to start the day as a cold front clears the area. Otherwise, skies will become partly cloudy, and we'll all really notice the cooler, drier air...highs barely make it to 70 degrees.

Clearing skies and becoming quite chilly Saturday night, with lows in the low 50s.

Then get ready for a nice stretch of weather, with mostly sunny skies Sunday through Tuesday, and highs starting off in the low to mid 70s on Sunday, in the mid 70s on Monday, and in the mid to upper 70s on Tuesday. Overnight sleeping weather will remain comfortable through the period.

Showers and storms then return on Wednesday.
