Woman, 5-year-old child killed by distracted driver in Monroe County

SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A woman and a 5-year-old child were killed in a crash Friday evening in Summerfield Township.

According to police, a 27-year-old man was texting while driving on US-23, north of Summerfield Road, at 6 p.m. when he hit the back of a Hyundai Elantra with his Dodge Ram pick-up truck.

The car was pushed into the back of a Toyota Solara, police said.

Gladys Johnson, 35, of Redford and Za-Kira Johnson, 5, were in the Elantra. They were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The truck also hit a Cadillac CTS.

Everyone else involved in the crash refused medical treatment, police said.

Police said everyone involved were wearing seat belts, and alcohol is not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
