Woman killed in small plane crash in Brighton

Pilot hospitalized in serious condition

BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Before 9 Saturday morning a single engine plane crashed, minutes after taking off from the Brighton Township Airport on Hyne Rd, killing one and critically injuring the other.  According to Michigan State Police the plane experienced engine trouble and crashed into a swamp feet away from the airport.

 

Police tell Local 4 the 79-year-old male pilot was airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital and remains in critical condition. The passenger, a 56-year- old female from Costa Rica died at the scene of the crash. Police are working to notify family members and names are not being released.

 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be on the scene to investigate the cause of the crash. That could take up to one week. The plane will not be moved until the investigation is complete. Local 4 was told by the airport manager the pilot has more than 30 years of flying experience and whatever happened in the air must have been out of his control.
