DETROIT – A gunman who police believed was barricaded Tuesday morning inside Soul Devils Motorcycle Club on Plymouth Road in Detroit is in custody after he was found at a hospital.
It turns out the 35-year-old man was never barricaded inside the club. Instead, he had driven himself to a hospital after being shot by a 28-year-old woman who, police said, may have been defending herself at the club.
Detroit police said it all started during a party Monday night at the club. The man and woman, who are both members of the club, were intoxicated when the man propositioned the woman for sex. The man allegedly tried to have sex with the woman but she denied his advances. When he wouldn't let up she shot him in the arm, police said.
The man returned fire, grazing the woman in the face with a bullet. The man drove himself to the hospital. The woman was transported to a hospital and is expected to be OK.
When police arrived at the Soul Devils club, the woman told officers the man was still inside the club with a few other people who were all intoxicated. Officers believed the man was barricading himself inside the club, armed with more than one gun. Police shut down Plymouth Road near Littlefield Street for hours Tuesday morning, starting about 5:15 a.m.
However, a nearby hospital called police with a description of a man which fit the description of the gunman. An officer went to the hospital and arrested the 35-year-old man.
A SWAT team was working to clear the rest of the intoxicated people from the club.
