Ypsilanti Township man, teenage son stabbed by 'calm' woman who broke into home

Homeowner says woman ran out with his knife and his pants

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 64-year-old man and his 18-year-old son are recovering Monday after they were stabbed in their Ypsilanti Township home by a woman who broke in.

The stabbing happened at 5:31 a.m. Sunday on North Harris Road in Ypsilanti Township. The homeowner said he was asleep and his 18-year-old son was watching television when a woman grabbed a knife on his porch and charged in.

"I figured, 'There goes,'" Joseph Heath said. "She's going to kill me and stab my heart. This is eight stitches here."

Heath spend 20 years in the Army without getting a scratch, but he found himself face-to-face with a knife-wielding woman when he woke up to his son being attacked.

"My son had his back to the door and she came in and started stabbing him," Heath said. "She said, 'Give me the money,' and stabbed at the same time."

She then went after Heath, and he said her behavior was odd because she was calm.

"When she was stabbing him and me, she looked like she was cutting a piece of meat to eat -- calm," Heath said.

He said he has no idea why she chose his house, but she ignored his advertised warning before the strange attack.

"She grabbed my pants lying on the floor," Heath said. "I was naked because I sleep without my clothes on. She grabbed my pants and ran out the door and took the knife with her. I was bleeding so bad. My son was hollering. Rather than try and chase her, which I would've, I just stayed and called police."

Police don't have much to go on other than a very basic description of a black woman in her 30s with an average build.

"I hope they catch her before she does this to somebody else," Heath said.

His pants turned up just down the street, but Heath said she still has his knife.

Heath's son has an injured lung, but he hopes to be released Monday.
