DETROIT – If you're looking at add a pet to your family - adoption may be an option!

Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats, according to the ASPCA.

Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner.

It's estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat, according to APPA.

Here are some places to adopt pets around Southeast Michigan:

Michigan Humane Society (Detroit/other locations) - 313-872-3400: Looking for a new pet?  The Michigan Humane Society Detroit Animal Care Campus has dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, birds and other animals available for adoption. 

Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society (Detroit) - 313-891-7188: Since 1935, the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society (MACS) has dedicated its efforts to providing refuge to stray, injured, and forgotten animals. We work to promote humane education and actively initiate affirmative legislative action.

Michigan Animal Adoption Network (Troy) - 248-545-5055: The Michigan Animal Adoption Network (MAAN) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to animal care, rescue and adoption in Metro Detroit.

Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center (Auburn Hills) - 248-391-4100: Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center operates as an open admission shelter for cats based on available capacity since January 2, 2015. 

Michigan Animal Rescue League (Pontiac) - 248-335-9290: The Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) is one of southeast Michigan’s most established animal shelters, serving the community since 1953.

Humane Society of Huron Valley (Ann Arbor) - 734-662-5585: HSHV is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt public charity. We are independently run and rely on the generosity of people like you to continue our mission to support the loving, responsible care of every animal in our community.

Shelter to Home Animal Rescue/Adoption Center (Wyandotte) - 734-556-3435: Shelter to Home, Inc. is an animal rescue organization that works to save impounded animals in Southeastern Michigan by placing them into home foster care until permanent and loving homes can be found. We predominantly rescue cats due to a limited number of dog fosters.

Grosse Point Animal Adoption Society (Grosse Pointe Farms/Harper Woods) - 313-884-1551: Founded in 1997, our mission is to serve the Grosse Pointes and neighboring communities as a foster home based, non-euthanasia, organization that finds suitable homes for indoor companion animals that have been abandoned, surrendered or found.

Misfit Angels Rescue (Eastpointe) - 586-339-5443: Misfit Angels Rescue is a 501(c)3 registered non-profit organization based out of Macomb County, MI.    We are a small group of volunteers whose mission is to rescue, vet, provide housing, and ultimately re-home abandoned, stray, unwanted and neglected dogs. 

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (Dearborn) - 313-943-2697: The Friends organization strives daily to care for homeless animals and place them in to new, loving homes. Animal education, however, is also key to our mission. We offer classes and tips to encourage responsible pet ownership and provide community outreach focused on the human-animal experience.

New Beginnings Animal Rescue (Royal Oak) - 248-543-4070: New Beginnings Animal Rescue (NBAR) was founded in 2010. NBAR is a No-Kill, 501(c)(3), Non-Profit cat rescue that focuses 100% of our energy, time, money, and effort on providing the best care for the cats in our rescue as we work diligently towards finding loving, adoptive homes for them. We are completely run on volunteers, fosters, and donations.

Almost Home Animal Rescue League (Southfield) - 248-200-2695: Dedicated to finding loving, forever homes for homeless animals. 

Furever Tails Animal Rescue (Oakland Twp) - 248-834-3387: Furever Tails Animal Rescue is a foster home based, no-kill animal rescue.

Michigan Pug Rescue (Farmington) - 248-473-8389: We are a nonprofit  501C 3 corporation registered in the State of Michigan. We do not have a physical location for you to visit.  All of the Pugs are housed in private foster homes.

Humane Society of Macomb (Utica) - 586-731-9210: We provide humane care for unwanted, abused and injured animals. We work to prevent cruelty to animals, and place adoptable pets into good, permanent homes with responsible owners and promote spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation.

PAWS Animal Rescue(Schwartz Creek) - 810-635-9649: PAWS Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization that is passionately dedicated to saving abused, neglected, and abandoned animals.

Top Dog Animal Rescue (Troy) - 248-680-1426: Top Dog Rescue is a 501c3 Non-Profit, no-kill, all volunteer rescue organization!

SPCA of Southwest Michigan (Kalamazoo) 269-344-1474: We are non-profit organization supported by volunteers dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from Southwest Michigan pounds and adopting them into responsible homes.

Adopt-A-Pet (Fenton) - 810-629-0723: Our mission is to provide a means to place unwanted, adoptable animals into appropriate, loving homes. We are committed to reduce the amount of animals killed daily in overcrowded shelters by providing programs to help
