A doggone good time: 6 Metro Detroit dog parks

Dog parks are a great place for pets to exercise and socialize with other dogs.

Check out some of these off-the-leash dog parks in southeast Michigan that your dog can enjoy.

PetSmart P.U.P.'s Detroit Dog Park

The dog park is at a site that used to be a vacant park. It was started when dog owners in Detroit started talking about how the city didn’t have a park dedicated to dogs.

This free dog park located in Corktown welcomes dogs of all sizes as long as they're licensed and vaccinated.

There are no separate areas for large and small dogs.

The park is located at the corner of 17th and Rose streets.

Wayne County Parks Dog Park

The 3-acre dog park features parks for both large and small dogs.

The park includes shelters and play equipment.

Dogs must be registered at the Wayne County Parks office in Nankin Mills, located at 33175 Ann Arbor Trail in Westland.

The fee to register a dog for a year is $20 for Wayne County residents and $25 for nonresidents. Bring the up-to-date paper dog license and up-to-date vaccination record when registering a dog.

The park is at Hawthorne Ridge Park on Hines Drive, west of Merriman Road in Westland.

Red Oaks Dog Park

This 5.2-acre park has a picnic shelter area for owners and dog drinking stations, as well as an area for small dogs.

There are also waste stations and a hose for cleaning dogs.

There is a $5 vehicle entry fee for residents and a $12 vehicle fee for nonresidents.

The park is at 31353 Dequindre Road in Madison Heights.

Brownstown Dog Park

The park has areas for both large and small dogs. There are benches and water containers.

Dogs must be registered at the Brownstown Water Department at 21313 Telegraph Road.

A yearly registration is $25 for residents of the city and $35 for nonresidents. Registration covers three dogs for a year. A current dog license and proof of vaccinations are needed to register dogs.

The park is located next to the Brownstown Animal Shelter at 23700 Lillian.

Friends of Canton Dog Park

The park features 6 acres for dogs to play. It includes an area for dogs that weigh more than 20 pounds and dogs that weigh under 20 pounds.

A yearly registration of $25 Canton residents and $50 for nonresidents covers up to three dogs per household. There is also a $20 refundable key fob deposit.

Dogs can be registered at the Canton Clerk Office at 1150 South Canton Center Road.

The park is located on Denton Road, north of Cherry Hill Road.

Maloof Statler Dog Park

This 53,842-square-foot park has both a large area for big dogs and a smaller area for small dogs.

Memberships must be purchased, but a class must be taken before. Information on the class and various fees can be found here.

The park is inside Herman Brys Park at 8 Mile Road and Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores.
