VIDEO: Detroit police officers help woman rescue cat from tree

DETROIT – Vonda Gwynn was out for a walk Sunday in Detroit's Rouge Park when she heard a cat but couldn't see it.

"I was out here walking with my girlfriend and as soon I got out of the car I heard a cat. I looked around and I didn't see any cats. I looked up and I was like, 'Oh my God, there's a cat up the tree,'" said Gwynn.

Gwynn kept walking but couldn't get the poor kitty out of her mind.

"I did (walk) one mile and I just kept thinking about the cat -- she's a kitten, she seems afraid. I can't just leave her up there. So I stopped my walking and tried to get the cat to come down," she said.

That proved to be quite a challenge. The kitten was not willing to get out of the tree.

"My girlfriend and I, we tried for about 1/2 hour and we couldn't get the cat down at all," said Gwynn.

But they were determined to finish what they started and help this animal. So Gwynn turned to the Internet for help.

"I Googled, 'How to get a cat out of a tree.' It said to get a carrier, get a laser beam and get some treats or food. So I ran home, because I don't live far from here, and I got all of those things," she said.

Then she found some more help.

"When I was coming back I saw a police officer and I asked her if she could help me. And the police officer was nice enough to come and help me," said Gwynn.

The video above shows two Detroit police officers helping Gwynn coax the little cat out of the tree. It takes several minutes. The officers stand on the hood and roof of the patrol car to get closer. Eventually they are able to reach the cat and bring it down to safety.

Gwynn admitted it's not a scene she would expect to see -- two police officers up a tree trying to rescue a cat.

"You hear about that on movies, or sitcoms," she said. "I was very happy that they were willing to help me. They're here to protect and to serve, just as they say."

She will keep the cat for now.

"I have a cat at home. She's not gonna be happy, but oh well," she said.

As for a name?

"I'm gonna name her Missy if it's a girl and Jam if it's a boy."
