Residential, retail development near Detroit's New Center breaks ground

DETROIT - A new development near Detroit's New Center neighborhood has broken ground.

Construction has started on the first phase of Baltimore Station, a project that will bring retail and residential to Detroit's Milwaukee Junction area.

The first phase will be completed by the end of 2017.

Baltimore Station will see the renovation of two historic but long-empty buildings, bringing about 8,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 23 apartments on the second and third floors.

An artisan bakery, to be run by high-profile downtown Detroit restaurateurs, will soon be announced. It will offer fresh breads, pastries and more, and sell to both consumers and wholesale.

The news comes a month after the much-celebrated Woodpile BBQ Shack in Clawson announced that it will open a second location in Baltimore Station, promising to set a new bar for barbecue with its fast and casual dining.

“Baltimore Station is a great project, but the story behind it is just flat out amazing,” said Peter Cummings, a co-principal of The Platform. “To help take what had been a class project for these guys, to take their vision and make it a reality, it’s just inspiring for not only the future of Detroit, but for the careers of these three brilliant young men.”

“Baltimore Station is perfectly positioned between Midtown and New Center, right on the QLine and at the Amtrak station,” said Dietrich Knoer, co-principal of The Platform. “It is the perfect location, and their vision was brilliant. We are proud of Baltimore Station, and even more proud to have Dang, Clarke and Myles on our team.”
