Winners score well at the 28th MWGA State Championship

Championship was held at The Medalist in Marshall

MARSHALL, Mich. – The Michigan Women's Golf Association State Championship, open to all amateur female golfers, was held at The Medalist in Marshall, MI, Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21.

41 women competed in two divisions.

Placing first in division 1, flight 1 - Collegiate with a 2-day gross total of 143 was Kimberly Dinh of Midland, MI. Kim is a junior at University of Wisconsin. Runner-up with a 154 was Jacqueline Mulder, who is attending Ferris State. Other collegiate players were Elizabeth Dawkins from Big Rapids attending Oakland University, Jeryl Schudel from Calvin College and Brooke Kastamo from Olivet College.

The State Champion and first low gross winner in division 1, flight 2 was Joan Garety of Ada, MI, who scored a 2-day gross total of 155. This was the seventh time Joan has won the MWGA State Championship. The Overall Low Net winner and first low net winner in division 1, flight 2 with a 142 total was Lori Rogers of Washington, MI. Second place low gross was awarded to Darci Stocker of Flint, MI, who posted a 161 total. Second place low net in this division flight went to Chris Zeigler, who posted a 150.

The Overall Low Gross winner of division 2, flights 2-1 and 2-2 was Olivia Bayagich of Washington, MI, who scored a 175 total, and the Overall Low Net was won by Monica Oliver of Farmington Hills, MI, with a 145.

Bayagich also won the first low gross in division 2, flight 2-1 and Sonia Pysh of Henrico, VA, took second low gross with a 176. First low net in flight 2-1 with a 143 went to Karen Strock of Manchester, MI, and second low net with a 145 was won by Ruth Wilson of Chandler, AZ.

In division 2, flight 2-2 the first low gross was awarded to Susan Merrick of W. Bloomfield, MI, who posted a 198 total. Second low gross went to Joan Cleland of Bloomfield Hills, MI, who shot a 2-day total of 199. Monica Oliver also won the first low net in flight 2-2 with her 145 and Lu Stockton of Canton, MI won second low net with a 146.

Next MWGA competition will be a 2-Woman 4-Ball planned for Sunday, August 4, at Dunham Hills in Hartland, MI. Play will begin with a 9am shotgun. Golf, cart and range are included in the $63 member entry fee ($83 non-member). For an additional $10 golfers may participate in contests such as chip-ins, closest to the flagstick and skins.
