Tigers trade for shortstop Andrew Romine
Tigers acquire 28-year-old Romine from Angels in exchange for pitcher Jose Alvarez
Romine appeared in a career-high 47 games for the Angels in 2013 and batted .259 with nine runs scored, three doubles and 10 RBI. He played at second base (four games), third base (24 games) and shortstop (17 games,) compiling a .967 fielding percentage on the season. He batted .287 (104x363) in 89 games with Triple A Salt Lake City in 2013.
He was drafted by the Angels in the 5th round of the June 2007 and made his major league debut with the club in 2010. In parts of four seasons at the major league level, he has batted .250 with 13 runs scored, three doubles and 11 RBI in 74 career games.
Alvarez, 24, appeared in 14 games with the Tigers last season as he spent the majority of 2013 with Triple A Toledo. He compiled a 1-5 record, 5.82 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 14 appearances (six starts) with Detroit in 2013.
During his time with Toledo, he posted an 8-6 record, 2.80 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 20 starts (21 appearances) with the club. Additionally, he was named the Tigers Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
